Sonbroers director Ruan Barnard says that the jury is still out whether solar energy increases the value of a home, mostly because the urgency of the need is only emerging now.
“An Engineering News article by Christiaan Hattingh, managing director of AWPower, in April 2022, said that there was no simple formula to calculate exactly how much value an investment in a solar solution will increase the value of your property. The feeling was that it would increase the value of the property by some percentage points”.
However, the article was published five months before September’s Stage 6 load shedding rocked South Africans.
“Perhaps there’s a short answer to the question. One, we believe that the value of properties with solar energy will increase until it becomes the norm. Two, given Eskom’s track record, if you had two houses of similar structure and in the same price category but one had a high-performing, high-quality solar energy system, which house would you buy?”
